Optimizing KML for Google Search
July 2nd, 2007
This is something I’ve not noticed before (or is it new?) - a page amongst Google’s KML Documentation with recommended steps to take, to ensure files and websites are optimized for Google Geo Search.
There are sections on geoRSS, the new KML2.2 attribution tags, sitemap creation and useful tips about structuring files to provide meaningful search results. It has thos to say about KML:
- Give your <Document> a meaningful <name>.
- Provide a relevant <description> for each <Placemark> so that the user can see the context of the search result.
- If you have a lot of data, divide it into topic-specific layers.
- Give each <Feature> an “id” so that the search result can link directly to it.
Interesting to note the importance of using “id”s -the online KML Validator keeps nagging me about this too. Looks like I’ll have to put back all those I’ve deleted!
Anyway, I’m going to follow all the steps on some new placemark collections - lets see how well it works.
